Why do we use the word target vs goal?
A few years ago, one of my mentors started to use the word, targets rather than goals. I thought, aren’t they the same thing? When I began to really look at the words and considered the differences in them, I started to use the word target as well. Targets offer us more flexibility and allow us to aim towards the bullseye. Whether we land on the bullseye or not, we can see that where we did land is still moving forward. Forward movement is always a reason to celebrate.
What do I mean about targets being flexible?
Consider, the SMART goals analogy – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Specific. Let’s consider a “goal” using this analogy, we want to save $1200 for Christmas in order to do this we need to save $100 a month. Given all the information we currently have this “goal” meets the SMART goal analogy. It’s Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-specific. Great, we’re all prepared, and excited, we are going to ROCK this!! Then, life begins to happen. Suddenly, the Christmas bills come in and they were more than you thought/planned for. So in January, we could only save $25 rather than the full $100. That’s okay, I have wiggle room in February, you think, and I can make up the difference. Instead of celebrating that we managed to save $25, we start to move into a mindset of judgment and doubt.
If we set a target of saving $1,200 for Christmas, we can still use the SMART objectives, however, when we save that $25, it offers us the opportunity of saying, with everything that happened in January, I managed to save $25!! The opportunity to celebrate that “WIN” opens us up to possibilities and expansion rather than feelings of judgment, doubt, and shame. Seeing that we are still moving towards that target of $1,200. If other things come up in the months ahead, with a target and a “WIN” mindset we retool and refocus the target.
Can you see why using a target vs goal may be more freeing in achieving those desires in your life? How could you set a target to achieve what you are choosing in/for your life? What target(s) are you choosing to set?
