What Does All This Affirmation Stuff Really Mean?

Affirmations, you hear the word all over the place. Say an affirmation, write an affirmation, but what are they really? I completely understand, it wasn’t until I was into my late twenties and I was learning about mindfulness that I understood what an affirmation really was and how to use them.

Telling yourself over and over how amazing you really are can seem silly and a little far fetched. However, there are more and more science based research backing the world of positive affirmations.


First, let’s look at what an affirmation really is: “Put simply, they are positive phrases or statements used to challenge negative or unhelpful thoughts.” -Source

How to use Affirmations?

There are many different ways you can use an affirmation.


I love to journal about how my day has gone, what my feelings are and basically do a brain dump of all things on my mind. This is a great way to start or end a journal each day. Writing down 5 “I am” statements such as I am Strong, I am Determined, I am Amazing. You can also use different positive quotes or phrases. Louise Hay is one of my favorites.

Looking into a Mirror-

Now I will be honest when I first started looking at my self in the mirror and saying out loud how I am beautiful, I felt like a complete goof. I felt very silly and very uncomfortable. However, the more often I did them, the more powerful they felt.

Saying it Out Loud-

I use to do this when I was driving around. I would be alone so it would feel less awkward. When I was in school, before a test, I would say all the way there how confident and smart I was. Now I am totally confident and have no problem telling people how awesome I really am.

Random Sticky Notes-

This is a great way to keep things around work and your house. If you want to be discrete at work you can put them in your filing cabinet or inside a folder you open often. Write something thoughtful and something to remind yourself that you are enough and you are doing the best you can.

Creating your Own Affirmations

This can be difficult at first. Like how many different ways can you tell yourself that you are truly awesome? No problem. Each day on our Social Media Platforms @nurturingyouwc. We post a daily affirmation, I am statements and a powerful phrase to go along with it from different affirmation card decks.

Some Sort of Magic? Or is Science?

I totally get it, you may be skeptical of talking to yourself or telling yourself that you are beautiful and amazing. BUT! There is total science behind positive affirmations!
